Working the Alps

January 7, 2011

We spent the last few weeks of 2010 exploring the perspective from another mountain town, in Zermatt Switzerland. The mountains are different here, being they are mostly all above tree line, and just massive beasts.

Stories & tools from the First Ascents

December 30, 2010

This week we are working out of a remote location, from one ski town to another. We took some time today to visit the Matterhorn museum, where they have documented the history of the numerous climbing expeditions that have been achieved on this one-of-a-kind mountain. Read the rest of this entry »

Made in the USA

November 29, 2010

It’s great these days to see an emergence back to the need, and want, for American made goods. One category that we work on as a focus, is almost completely gone from being made in the USA, and that’s technical outerwear. There are a few remaining factories that are able to keep their doors open, and some even thriving, which makes us wonder…why can’t there be more?

World Expo 2010 Shanghai

DSC06623

OK, got here after the entrance gates have closed for the night, but the Expo was open for another two hours.  First task, getting by 3 Chinese police officers that don’t speak English.  Hmm…. pleading? bribing? offering one of the designers that was with us?  I’ll just try and reason with them in English, that should work. Little time in Asia

June 26, 2010

So it’s that time of year when we head over for one of many trips to check in with the factories. Thought I’d share some pictures of our good times.

First morning in Shaghai, jetleg in full effect, thought I’d go for a nice quiet 5am run in the park alone. Hard to find “alone” in Shaghai. Read the rest of this entry »

DSC06283

Being that we’re almost into June, here in Utah there is still plenty of snow to get some last minute shoots in. Had a little fun up on Guardsman pass recently, 5:30am start time up the hill. Read the rest of this entry »

French Toast Rehab

April 22, 2010

My lack of posts have been great, as it’s in the middle of crunch design time, but had to take a minute to line up with good friend Mark “Elf” Ellefsen, for a little FTR.  If you don’t know the name, Elf was one of the gnarly snow shredders along with Palmer, Farmer, Kelly, and others… bringing snowboarding to where it is today.  Today, it’s all about the French toast, a serious addiction.

Don’t Call Me An Expert – But Become One Yourself

March 17, 2010

I would never call myself an expert, and living in the Rockies, far away from the industry, I hardly feel like an insider, but I have been doing what I love for a minute now, an can hopefully give a little insight to my world.

Where I am not an expert, I go to learn more to become closer to one.  If there is something that you love to do, and want to continue to do it, and hopefully get PAID to do it, then also try to become as proficient as you can in that area. There are so many opportunities to learn these days, and I don’t mean only in a classroom, but online there are endless opportunities to reach into other cultures’ lives to see how/what their lives are like, there are inspiration websites for designers, numerous blogs on any aspect of style, educational blogs on how to do anything from sew a t-shirt to film the perfect snowboard cliff drop.  You need to open your eyes and not limit yourselves to which school you are in, where you live, how much money you have in your pocket, or who you know.  If you’re reading this, then you probably have access to a computer online, and therefore you have access to these tools to become more advanced in whatever you’re interested in.  If not, hit up a Barnes and Noble or Borders and find yourself a reading section to learn more about your subject.  The more you learn what others teach, the more you will be able to teach yourself.

media

One of the things that really interests me over the past few years in all the new social media outlets and tools that are on the rise.  Since everything has been so new, working with people across the country to figure out the best way to utilize these tools has been great.  From Twitter, Gowalla, YouTube, Facebook, Linkedin, all the Google Applications, and the numerous collaborating sites popping up daily to share your work, get feedback, and give feedback to others.  Being online is not only about getting as much as you can from it, but it’s also about giving back what you know.  This collaboration might help you, and others, fine tune what it is you’re going after.  May it be t-shirts graphics, print ads, boardshort designs, website designs, or photographs.  Critique, be critiqued, learn, practice, repeat.
